MOKANE, Mo. - Three of four South Callaway R-2 buildings moved to distance learning Monday, but will return to in-person classes today.

Students in the district's elementary, middle and high schools spent one day learning from home - what the district refers to as Plan D. Students who attend grades pre-kindergarten through second in the South Callaway Early Childhood building continued to have in-person classes under their regular schedule, Plan A.

The transition, announced Friday, followed new cases of COVID-19 among South Callaway students and staff.

According to a news release from Kevin Hillman, the district recorded at least six new cases between Jan. 15 and Friday.

"There are an additional number of cases awaiting test results or in the contact tracing phase at this time," he added. "This could result in an increased number of positive cases over the next few days."

In a news release Monday, Hillman stated the affected staff were clustered in the food-service department, restricting in-house food operations until Feb. 2.

However, by the end of Monday, the district had secured assistance from an unnamed third-party vendor to provide a limited lunch menu for the next five school days. This will allow students to return to in-person classes.

"As always, we thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work through yet another challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic," Hillman added in his update to district patrons.
