Two traffic stops Tuesday led to two arrests for illegal drugs in Moniteau County.
In one incident, deputies were on routine patrol when they reported seeing a speeding vehicle heading south on Missouri 5 just outside Tipton, according to Moniteau County Sheriff's Department reports. The vehicle was reported to be traveling at 103 mph.
Deputies stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as James Shaffner, 40, of Richland. Deputies reported Shaffner was nervous and evasive and denied their request to search his vehicle. A K-9 unit was called to the scene and indicated a positive alert for drugs. Deputies then searched the vehicle and allegedly located marijuana, drug paraphernalia, digital scales, methamphetamine and packaging material for the sale of drugs.
The second incident occurred when deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding on Missouri 87, just south of California.
The driver was identified as Robert McWilliams, 34, of Versailles. Deputies allegedly noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and later learned McWilliams was on probation for possession of a controlled substance. Deputies had McWilliams exit the vehicle and conducted a search, reportedly locating methamphetamine and a portable police scanner with local law enforcement frequencies.
