Efforts are underway to increase women's participation in disc golf in the Jefferson City area.

Recently, a Facebook group called JC Women's Disc Golf was created as a subsection of the Jefferson City Disc Golf Club with the hopes of bringing more women to the sport and to create a women's-only league.

Alexis Kerman, program manager for outdoor recreation with the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, said she wanted to create the group to connect women in the sport.

Kerman lives in Columbia and participates in a women's disc golf league there, and she wants to see that in Jefferson City.

"It's a group that fosters growth and creates space for women to play in and feel comfortable," Kerman said. "Right now in the disc golf world, as it becomes a popular sport, women's disc golf is really populating and popping up."

The Linc wellness center hosted the first event Friday evening in a planned weekly series with the goal of creating an official women's league.

Every Friday until March 5, except for Feb. 12 and 26, The Linc will host an indoor disc golf putting league event.

This Friday, the event offered a women's and youth division for free and a $6 open for all interested players.

These divisions will be offered every other Friday, and on the opposing Fridays, they will offer a mixed or doubles division for $6 and a free youth division. For the mixed division, teams can be two women or a man and woman but not two men.

"A lot of times, females starting out tend to be more comfortable coming with a spouse or a brother or male friend at first, so that's why we're offering those," Kerman said.

The Jefferson City Disc Golf Club, which requires an annual fee, also hosts leagues and tournaments in Jefferson City.

The two main disc golf course are at Binder Park - the Joseph C. Miller course across from the softball complex and the Dam located at the north end of the park.

The club also participates in tournaments.
