Two incumbents are seeking re-election on the Cole R-5 School District Board of Education in Eugene for the April 6 ballot.

Vice President Jennifer Bradley, of Mary's Home, and President Ryan Carrender, of Henley, are running for three-year terms. There are two three-year terms available.

Carrender, a Jefferson City Fire Department captain, is running for his third term on the board. One of Carrender's current goals as a board member is to get the district through COVID-19-related circumstances such as distance learning, he said.

"That's been a learning process all along, so we're trying to realize what we do right and keep doing that or maybe even add more of that, and then learn from what didn't work so well and change that," he said.

Carrender said he would also like to work with Charley Burch, who will be the new superintendent for the 2021-22 school year.

"My ultimate goal as a school board member is to work with the administration of the school to provide the best possible positive learning environment for the students as well as a welcoming atmosphere for the teachers and staff, one where they feel appreciated," Carrender said.

Bradley, a retail sales and experience manager at Commerce Bank, is running for her second term on the board. She has three children in the district, including two in high school and one in elementary school.

Bradley said she decided to run for re-election because she wants to continue her efforts.

"We're making a lot of progress, and I really want to see that job through," she said.

Bradley said she also wants to work with Burch as well as the teachers, students and administration to continue to progress. Another goal of hers is to continue to improve virtual learning and other COVID-19-related challenges, she said.

"I want to see how we can continue to get better and fine tune that," she said. "I don't think we'll ever be perfect at it, but I want to see us continue to progress and push forward so that we have excellence in education."
