Local attorney Angela Silvey has filed as a candidate for Jefferson City municipal judge.

Silvey, who is a partner attorney at Silvey & Associates, which she started in 2014, also sits on the Historic City of Jefferson board and the United Way board.

Silvey said she is running for the position to make sure the courts are fair.

"My whole goal is to be active in the community and make sure that things I'm involved in are being taken care of," Silvey said. "I want to make sure the court systems are being fair and the people in the community are being treated fairly."

Silvey said she would like to make sure the court system is spending tax dollars well and providing alternative programs when appropriate.

For example, giving a young person community service instead of a fine as punishment for a speeding ticket.

"I think it gives a little more of an impact on an individual, especially when they're younger, when they have to do community service instead of just their parents paying a fine," Silvey said.

She hopes providing an appropriate punishment will help with recidivism and stop recurring offenses.

Silvey previously ran for the position of municipal judge in 2019 against Brian Stumpe, who was elected, and Tim Anderson.

As of Tuesday, one other candidate, Scott Evans, had filed for the position.

Candidates are seeking to fill the vacancy created by Stumpe's election as Cole County associate circuit judge. Curtis Hanrahan is serving as a temporary municipal judge until the April 6 election after Mayor Carrie Tergin appointed him to the position.

Jefferson City voters will also select five City Council representatives and a city prosecutor.

Ward 1 Councilman David Kemna, Ward 2 Councilwoman Laura Ward and Ward 5 Councilman Mark Schreiber have filed for re-election to their seats.

Mary Schantz and Scott Spencer have filed for the 3rd Ward council seat, Derrick Spicer has filed for the 4th Ward and Alicia Edwards has filed for the 5th Ward.

Current City Prosecutor Gaylin Carver has filed for re-election.

Candidate filing for the municipal election closes Jan. 19.
