Patriot Day events announced

Sept. 11, 2021, will mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks on New York City, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.

The Missouri Patriot Day Committee will commemorate this anniversary with a two-day event Sept. 10-11 in Jefferson City.

Events scheduled Sept. 10 on the Missouri state Capitol's south lawn will start at 7 p.m. with opening ceremonies to include reading of the 2,977 names of those who lost their lives on 9/11.

On Sept. 11, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk will start at 8:30 a.m. on the south steps of the Capitol. Members of the public are invited to run or walk the streets of downtown Jefferson City with first responders, veterans and active military service personnel, some of whom will run or walk in their gear. Registration will be available in March.

A military fly-over will kick off the Patriot Day Parade at 11 a.m. Sept. 11 at the corner of Broadway and High streets. Event organizers said the parade will be a solemn event featuring first responders, military and veteran units. They encourage bands to participate playing patriotic music and welcome floats showing a patriotic theme.

The Missouri Division of Fire Safety will conduct its 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Jefferson State Office Building during the parade. The stair climb participants will be part of the parade that will jump off at the Jefferson Building to start the stair climb.

The day will conclude with a dinner prepared by the American Legion at St. Peter Selinger Hospitality Center.
