Probation ordered in weapons offense case

A St. Louis man charged in a weapons offense that occurred in May 2020 in Jefferson City pleaded guilty to charges as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

During a hearing before Cole County Judge Cotton Walker, Tyler Scott, 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault (amended from first- degree assault) and unlawful use of a weapon. A charge of armed criminal action was dismissed.

He was placed on five years supervised probation. If he fails to meet conditions of his probation, he faces 11 years in prison.

A man told officers he was in the 800 block of Stadium Boulevard and Scott came to the same location a few minutes later, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

The man said there had been an earlier confrontation between he and Scott, and he was fearful for his life because Scott hit him in the face with a firearm.

After seeing Scott the next day, the man said he called his family to pick him up on Stadium Boulevard. Officers were later called to the scene after reports of shots fired in the area.

Officers examined security camera footage from the area and saw Scott "shooting several times at the victim as he was going towards his family's vehicle." Officers said the man did not make any advancement toward Scott prior to the shooting.

Authorities said the victim's mother had a firearm in her vehicle and shot back at Scott. Officers reported finding seven 10mm shell casings where Scott was standing during the shooting and two 45-caliber shell casings where the victim's mother was parked at the time.

The victim and his family drove to the police department on Monroe Street and officers found the driver's side door of the vehicle had been damaged by a bullet.

Scott was arrested during a vehicle stop and was sitting on top of a Glock 10mm handgun.

When confronted with the security video, Scott admitted to shooting toward the victim and his family, but he claimed he had been shot at first.
