Flags to fly at half-staff to honor fall Jefferson City Marine

State and federal flags will be flying at half-staff as a Jefferson City native is laid to rest Saturday.

Gov. Mike Parson on Friday ordered all U.S. and Missouri flags stationed at government buildings around the state be flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of fallen U.S. Marine Dalton Pierson.

Pierson, a 21-year-old corporal in the United States Marine Corps, died July 28 in a training incident while on duty at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

The Jefferson City native and 2018 graduate of Jefferson City High School was transported to Jefferson City Wednesday, where more than 150 veterans, friends and community members took to the streets to wave flags and pay their respects to the passing procession.

"Corporal Pierson was a patriotic American who committed to serving his nation at such a young age by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps," Parson said in a news release. "Teresa and I extend our thoughts and prayers to Corporal Pierson's family and friends as they mourn the tragedy of a life lost too soon."

Pierson will be buried with full military honors at Riverview Cemetery.
