Cole County calculating 'breakthrough infections'

The Cole County Health Department is calculating how many of the county's fully vaccinated and partially vaccinated residents have since tested positive for COVID-19.

Cole County Health Department Director Kristi Campbell said they have seen fully vaccinated people and partially vaccinated people test positive for COVID-19 in Cole County.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked states at the start of April to instruct local health departments and health systems to collect real-time information on "breakthrough infections," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

"I don't know the exact number of how many," Campbell said Thursday. "We haven't been tracking, but our nurses are going to go back through our cases since January and record whether or not the positive case was vaccinated.

"Hopefully we can have those figures sometime next week. However, it won't be 100 percent accurate because depending on where the person received their vaccine, we might not have access to the record of it," she said.

Campbell said the state's vaccine database, Show Me Vax, does not include COVID-19 vaccines that are being administered out of state or through the federal vaccine allocation.

"That means that if someone receives their vaccine at a VA hospital or clinic or at big box store like Walmart or HyVee, those doses are not recorded in the state database," she said. "So, we are not able to know for sure if every positive case received their vaccine unless we would call and ask them. That also means that we have a higher percent vaccinated than what is reported on the state's website (covidvaccine.mo.gov/data)."

As of Thursday afternoon, the state numbers showed Cole County with 45,343 COVID-19 doses administered. Of that number, 25,532 had received their first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and 20,708 had received their second shot of those vaccines or the single dose of Johnson and Johnson.

The percentage of the Cole County population initiating vaccination was 34.3 percent and the percent of the population completing their vaccination was 26.4 percent. Over the last seven days, 1,654 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered in Cole County.
