A longtime business in Jefferson City is looking to expand with the hope of better serving senior citizens in the area.

Americare Senior Living released a preliminary plan to build new assisted and independent living facility in the 3700 block of West Edgewood Drive.

Robert Cook, project manager for Americare, told the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday night the current facility - Westbrook Terrace on North 10 Mile Drive - could either be used as a memory care facility or a lower cost assisted living facility.

The 14.32 acres for the new facility would include 30 assisted living beds and 22 independent living units, according to the proposed plan. It also includes common spaces for eating, exercising and social activities such as a movie theater.

The property is currently zoned for agricultural land, but the commission approved a reclassification of it for the project.

Cook said part of the project would also be to work with the parks department to connect the facility to existing greenway trails in the area to give residents better access to walking paths.

The company has owned and operated Westbrook Terrace for 25 years. Cook said the facility is aging and the move would allow for more housing units.

"We're ready to get started as we move through this process," he said.
