The Jefferson City Jaycees Christmas Parade will return to the streets of downtown for the 81st year next weekend.

The parade's theme this year is "Believe," which is open to the interpretation of the float makers, Jaycees parade chair Nicole Schulte said.

"Basically have your float stand for something you believe in," Schulte said. "It can be belief in the holidays, belief in Jesus, belief in Christmas, belief in Santa - it's open for interpretation."

The theme was chosen last year, but Schulte said it's taken on a new meaning now the coronavirus pandemic has hit.

"Given the times, we all need something to believe in," she said.

The parade will include about 50 floats, including holiday displays and twinkling lights, with Santa Claus rounding out the end.

The parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5.

The route will run east on High Street from Missouri Boulevard to Lafayette Street, then north on Lafayette Street to Capitol Avenue, west along Capitol Avenue, ending at the parking lots of the Harry S. Truman State Office Building.

Attendees are encouraged to spread out over the full route to help with social distancing, Schulte said.

Parking will be restricted on High Street from Washington to Adams streets.

Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting

Another Jefferson City Christmas tradition will return - but a little different than usual due to the pandemic.

The 15th annual Mayor's Tree Lighting will only be available to watch virtually via Facebook Live.

Mayor Carrie Tergin will light the tree, and the event will include videos submitted by local bands and choirs, showcase fun holiday crafts and more.

The Facebook Live event, hosted by JC Parks, will start at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, with the tree lighting taking place around 6:10 p.m.

The tree will be available to visit in person at Rotary Centennial Park, 102 Bolivar St. in Jefferson City, with special crafts there to take home.
