Blair Oaks Board of Education approves 2 changes on construction projects

The Blair Oaks R-2 Board of Education approved two change orders on construction projects Tuesday.

The board approved changes to the number of low-voltage conduits in the electricity running from the middle school to the new high school, which will save the district $8,000, Superintendent Jim Jones said.

The board also approved changes to the elementary school restroom renovation and sewer line replacement project so it will follow the Americans with Disabilities Standards for Accessible Design.

The contractor, Curtiss-Manes Schulte, will widen the entryways to the bathroom so they will be accessible for people in wheelchairs.

The original plan was only to replace the sewer line. To do this, the majority of the floor and walls in the bathroom will need to be salvaged and reinstalled, Architect Cary Gampher, of The Architects Alliance, said.

"The thing that we've came to realize is when you have a renovation project to this extent, it is the right time that you get that portion of your facility in compliance with all accessibility requirements," Jones said.

The elementary school opened in 1976, and the bathroom has not been updated since. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design were last updated in 2010. On March 15, 2012, compliance with the 2010 Standards was required for new construction and alterations under Titles II and III.

The original cost for the project was expected to be about $60,000, but it will now cost $99,737 due to the ADA changes, Jones said.

The project is expected to be complete by July 31, Jones said.

Summer school will be moved to the middle school this summer so the project can be completed. Summer school was planned to start Wednesday but was rescheduled to June 22.

"We think it's going to be a great improvement to a part of our school that is used by all our students on a daily basis and really is the primary restroom used by our guests at most events," Jones said.
