Construction work starts Wednesday at the Helias Athletic Complex to build a locker room and storage facility on the grounds. Helias Catholic High School received a financial gift from an anonymous donor to build the facilities.

Helias Catholic High School received a financial gift from an anonymous donor to build a locker room and storage facility at the De La Salle Soccer Stadium in the Crusader Athletic Complex.

Construction began Monday, and it's expected to be done before the fall soccer season in August, Helias Communication Director Sandy Hentges said.

The donor is affiliated with the school's soccer program, according to a news release from Helias.

"This building will enhance an already amazing soccer facility, while providing extra storage space and room for spectators," Helias President the Rev. Stephen Jones said in the news release. "Having received these funds in hand, we decided to proceed with construction this spring in order to continue supporting our local economy."

The locker room - which will be used by the boys' and girls' soccer programs - will include 40 lockers, restroom and shower facilities, storage, and space for coaches and athletic trainers.

The roof of the building will be used as a viewing deck.

The soccer field is also receiving a new turf playing surface to replace the existing turf, which has a factory defect that caused the seams on the back to come apart. The turf is warrantied, so there will be no cost to the school to replace it. It is expected to be replaced in July, Hentges said.

Helias Activities Director Tom Guinn said in the news release the new locker room will serve Helias' student-athletes in many ways.

"Perhaps most importantly, it will foster precious space for game preparation and team-building opportunities," he said.

The more than $10 million Crusader Athletic Complex opened in August 2017 as part of the school's 2013-18 five-year plan geared toward facility changes and organizations.

The De La Salle Soccer Field and Gerhardinger Tennis Pavilion includes eight courts, seating 360 combined.

The Crusader Athletic Complex also includes the Ray Hentges Football Stadium, an LED scoreboard, a track, a building with locker rooms, offices, storage and concessions, and more than 2,800 seats and hundreds of parking spots. The school also added a $300,000 storage space at the complex south of the football stadium in January 2019.
