The Jefferson City Fire Department was dispatched Monday night, May 11, 2020, to fight a fire that damaged a house in the 200 block of Dunford Street.

A woman rescued from a May 11 house fire in Jefferson City has died from injuries sustained in the fire.

The Jefferson City Fire Department did not release the victim's name in Friday's announcement, pending notification of next of kin.

When fire crews first arrived to the reported fire in the 200 block of Dunford Street, they found heavy smoke coming from all sides of the home and heavy fire coming from the front of the structure. A witness reported the house was potentially occupied.

Firefighters began to fight the fire and conduct search-and-rescue efforts, eventually finding an unresponsive woman in a bedroom. After resuscitation efforts, she was transported to a local hospital.

The origin of the fire appears to have been in the living room area near or on furniture, the department reported.

The fire's cause is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall's Office.
