Community Day returns at Building Community Bridges

Building Community Bridges' monthly Community Day is returning today.

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. outside the nonprofit's location, 213 E. Ashley St. in Jefferson City, Executive Director Alicia Edwards said.

It will feature free food and drinks, a bounce house and live dance/fashion shows.

The nonprofit has offered the monthly event since it formed about three years ago.

"In the summer, (Community Day) is outside and we block off the streets," Edwards said. "In the wintertime, we move indoors because it's colder outside."

The Royal Tigerettes dance department will perform.

Entertainment includes a live DJ, she said.

"We'll be practicing social distancing. We'll also be handing out masks," Edwards said.

Lowe's Home Improvement store donated the masks, she said.

Building Community Bridges' fashion and modeling programs begin Sunday.

Next month's Community Day, set for July 18, will be done in cooperation with the Jefferson City Police Department and other local first responders. Building Community Bridges is to present its executive board during that event.

The nonprofit is also asking for donations of backpacks and school supplies. It presented 100 backpacks to students last year. A goal this year is to collect and distribute 200 backpacks, Edwards said.
