Samaritan Center to host clothing giveaway

Volunteers and staff from The Samaritan Center have been sorting clothing for next week's giveaway. The center still had winter clothing in stock when the pandemic hit and then the spring/summer clothing donations started to accrue — too much to keep on hand at the agency. Clothes are being sorted into tubs and boxes and onto tables which will be set outside and refilled from said boxes and tubs and the clothing is picked up. The giveaway is a cooperative effort between Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and The Samaritan Center to make sure center clients have summer clothing.

The Samaritan Center and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church are to hold a clothing giveaway June 12 in Jefferson City.

The event is scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the parking lot next to Save-a-Lot, 1228 E. McCarty St.

A rain make-up day, if needed, is scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 13.

People attending are asked to wear face masks and maintain social distancing. They should also bring their own bags.

The event is intended to clear space within the Samaritan Center's warehouse, said Ben DeFeo, the center's operations manager.

"It's a garage sale without money," DeFeo said. "We moved five pallets of clothing that were backlogged in here. People can come in and pick up clothing."

Shifts of volunteers are sorting the products onto tables that will be moved outside for the event.

The clothing is season-appropriate, DeFeo said.

"This will get clothing out to people who need it and do some good," DeFeo said. "There's no limit on what people can take."

To get the word out, the center is also handing out flyers with food baskets distributed from its pantry.

"We rely on word of mouth. In our community, that's the best way," he said.

The Samaritan Center is not accepting any clothing donations at this time but will notify the public when it will resume accepting those donations.

It is, however, accepting food and cash donations.

It will hold an "It's in Your Hands" food and cash drive noon-3 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 1310 E. McCarty St.
