Jefferson City man faces multiple charges

A Jefferson City man faces eight felony charges and one misdemeanor following an early morning incident Wednesday at the apartment he shared with his sister.

Prosecutors charged Waun R. Ivory, 24, of 223 W. Atchison St. D, with:

Two counts of domestic assault, a Class B felony, for pointing a gun at his sister and her boyfriend and threatening to shoot them.

Three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a Class C felony, because three children under the age of 6 were in the room when he was waving "a gun in an angry and threatening manner."

Unlawful possession of a firearm, a Class C felony, because Ivory was convicted of second-degree robbery for a 2011 crime.

Unlawful use of a weapon, a Class D felony, for exhibiting and handling a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun "in an angry and threatening manner."

Armed criminal action, an "unclassified" felony, for using "a dangerous and deadly weapon" while committing the domestic assault and child endangerment crimes.

Possessing a defaced firearm, a Class B misdemeanor, because the serial and model numbers had been removed from the gun the victims identified as the one Ivory used.

If there's a conviction, the sentence for the Class B felonies could include a prison term from five to 15 years; the Class C felonies could result in up to seven years in prison; the Class D felony could include up to four years in prison, and the Class B misdemeanor could have a sentence of up to six months in jail.

The armed criminal action charge carries a minimum three-year prison sentence, with no probation, parole or early release before the three years are completed.

In a probable cause statement, Jefferson City police said they were sent to the apartment after getting a 911 call, where the operator could hear there was a disturbance and someone said, "I will put a hole in his head."

The officers saw Ivory walking across the front yard of the apartment building when his sister yelled that Ivory "had a gun in his pocket."

The sister said Ivory tried to start a fight with her boyfriend, and when she stepped between them to stop the fight, Ivory pulled a handgun from his pocket and threatened to kill both her and her boyfriend.

Another adult woman in the apartment gave police the same information, according to the statement.

The handgun was found on the ground outside the apartment, near where officers had stopped Ivory to question him.

Police reported finding one round of ammunition like that in the gun on the floor of the police car Ivory had been placed in - and another round was found in Ivory's pocket as he was being searched at the Cole County Jail after his arrest.

Ivory's bond was set at $50,000.

No court date has been set.
