County approves road project near Centertown

Cole County commissioners Tuesday approved a gravel road upgrade project near Centertown.

The upgrade is for Waterford and Mount Hope roads.

A section of Waterford Road was completed several years ago, and this project will complete the last section on that road and a section of Mount Hope Road connecting it to Route U, Cole County Engineer Eric Landwehr said.

Commissioners awarded the contract to S&A Equipment and Builders, which was the lowest of four bidders at $1,465,282.

Work will start later this year. The contract calls for the work to be completed by Nov. 20, Landwehr said.

In other action Tuesday, commissioners discussed the county’s insurance coverage dispute with Travelers Insurance over damage to the Sheriff’s Department and jail roof and decided to pursue a dispute resolution process in the county’s policy. Commissioners have engaged Roof Tech Consultants to do an assessment and report on damage to the roof. The cost is $4,250.

Damage to the roof occurred during the May 2019 tornado and has been exacerbated by other weather-related issues since then.
