Ameren to reduce energy-efficient charge for customers

The Missouri Public Service Commission has approved a request by Ameren Missouri to adjust the Energy Efficiency Investment Charge that appears on the monthly bills of their electric customers.

For a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a month, the EEIC will drop by about 63 cents a month, from $4.58 to $3.95, PSC officials said.

The change is expected to take effect Feb. 1.

The adjustment reflects costs of approved energy efficiency programs under the Missouri Energy Efficiency Investment Act.

Enacted by the state Legislature in 2009, the law is aimed at increasing investments in energy efficiency, decreasing residents' energy bills over time, avoiding or delaying the need for constructing future power plants, and reducing Missouri's reliance on coal and other fossil fuels.

The Energy Efficiency Investment Charge encourages utility companies to implement energy efficiency programs and was part of MEEIA. The EEIC is reflected as a separate line item on customer bills.

Ameren Missouri serves approximately 1.28 million electric customers in Missouri.
