A Jefferson City man has been charged in connection with a burglary case reported early Friday in Cole County.

Scott Schwarz, 37, is charged with attempted first-degree burglary and first-degree property damage.

The incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. in the 7100 block of St. Martins Boulevard, according to a Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement.

A resident reported someone was trying to get into the front door of their home and had broken the glass on the back door.

When deputies arrived, they began to look for the suspect and eventually found Schwarz in the 3100 block of Churchview.

The victim told deputies Schwarz had come to their home and knocked on the basement door asking to come in. The victim talked with Schwarz and found out he lived in a mobile home on Henwick Lane.

During their conversation, the victim claimed, Schwarz began to act "strange" and the victim decided not to let him in the house.

That's when Schwarz allegedly kicked the basement storm door with his foot and was able to get into the residence, but the victim had locked the downstairs door to the basement and said he had gotten a shotgun to protect himself. Schwarz then went to the front door to try to get in but eventually left.
