Man gets probation in Jefferson City drug case

A New Bloomfield man has been placed on five years supervised probation for delivery of a controlled substance and trying to destroy evidence in Jefferson City in November.

Corey Byrd Jr., 29, also pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and fourth-degree assault during a Wednesday hearing before Cole County Judge Dan Green.

Officers were called to remove Byrd from the parking lot of a business in the 2500 block of Missouri Boulevard, according to Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statements. He was found sleeping in a vehicle.

Byrd did not follow officers’ instructions and eventually had to be physically removed from the vehicle.

He allegedly dropped a bag containing a white, powdery substance and tried to grind the substance into the concrete of the parking lot with his foot. The substance was later tested, and officers said it was determined to be methamphetamine.

Officers searched the vehicle and reportedly found items such as numerous small zip-close bags and used syringes.

Byrd asked to be taken to a local hospital, saying he was suffering from chest pains after ingesting more than a gram of heroin. Byrd allegedly became combative with hospital and security staff, attempting to bite an officer who was trying to stop Byrd from striking nurses.
