Candidates begin filing for Cole County offices

Several candidates for countywide offices went to the Cole County Clerk's Office on Tuesday to add their names to the ballot for the August primary election.

County offices up for election in 2020 include Eastern and Western District commissioners, sheriff, assessor, public administrator and treasurer. There is also a new associate circuit judge position that must be filled.

Filing opened at 8 a.m. Tuesday. By the time of the close of business Tuesday afternoon, no Democrats had filed to run for an office.

Republican candidates who filed Tuesday include:

For Western District Commissioner: Gary Bemboom and Harry Otto.

For assessor: incumbent Chris Estes and challengers Jonathan Meyers and Rick Prather.

For Eastern District Commissioner: incumbent Jeff Hoelscher and challenger Rick Mihalevich.

For public administrator: Ralph Jobe.

For treasurer: incumbent Eric Peters.

For sheriff: incumbent John Wheeler.

For associate circuit judge: Todd Smith, Brian Stumpe and Matt Willis.

Candidates for the two circuit judge positions to be decided filed at the Missouri Secretary of State's Office.

In the race for Circuit 19 Division 2 judge, incumbent Judge Dan Green and attorney David Bandre filed Tuesday.

In the race for Circuit 19 Division 3 judge, current Associate Circuit Judge Cotton Walker filed. Current Circuit Judge Pat Joyce is retiring.

Filing for countywide offices in 2020 officially ends March 31. Filing takes place in the Cole County Clerk's Office, located on the second floor of the Courthouse Annex, 311 E. High St. in Jefferson City.

The primary election will be Aug. 4, and the general election will be Nov. 3.
