Ministers to offer 'Ashes on the Street' for Ash Wednesday

Three downtown Jefferson City churches will offer "Ashes on the Street" in observance of Ash Wednesday.

Ministers from First United Methodist, First Presbyterian and First Christian churches will share ashes with folks on busy downtown corners.

Teams of pastors will be stationed at the intersections of High and Jefferson streets, High and Madison streets, and High and Monroe streets to mark foreheads with the sign of the cross and to pray with passersby.

The event will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday.

"This Christian occasion is traditionally a call to repentance, a recognition of human mortality and a reminder of the relationship between the Creator and creature," according to a First Christian Church news release. "By providing 'Ashes on the Street,' pastors symbolically meet the people where they are to help them see the sacredness and fragility of their lives."
