Capital Mall will be packed with booths and exhibits on home building and remodeling during the 2020 annual Home Show, to be hosted this weekend by the Home Builders Association of Central Missouri.

More than 160 exhibits will fill the corridors of the mall Friday and Saturday to give attendees the chance to find professionals in the field and learn new ideas.

"Anything related to building or remodeling, from start to finish," HBA Executive Director Rachel Andrews said. "We have everything all located in one place for them to come shop."

The many vendors include professionals in fencing, energy solutions, lumber, building, glass, heating and air, landscaping, banking, internet, roofing, flooring and others.

Attendees will have the chance to enter a raffle to win prizes, and there will be a children's construction zone where children can participate in interactive games and build a birdhouse with the help of professionals.

Throughout the show, there will be informational seminars on a variety of topics including protecting your home from water damage, what senior citizens can do to stay in their homes as they age, woodworking, battery-powered tools and solar energy.

The city's first Fix-it Fair, a new addition to the home show, will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Fix-it Fair will be coordinated with the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District.

Fix-it Fairs are events where residents can bring broken items from small appliances to clothing to electronics and learn how to repair them instead of throwing them out and replacing them.

Lelande Rehard, Solid Waste Management District's district manager in Columbia, said this is the first event they've hosted outside of Columbia, where Fix-it Fairs are held quarterly.

"Our goal is not necessarily to fix stuff but to get people to see repair as an option - think about the quality, durability and repairability of the products they buy and think design and access to repair information impacts products, markets and value," Rehard said. "We have had a lot of luck actually fixing stuff on site, too."

Fixing repairable items instead of disposing of them can save resources and money and reduce waste. Expert volunteers will be on hand to assist with repairs. Residents are limited to one item each that can be carried inside, excluding microwaves and cathode ray tube monitors.

"We all have something sitting on a counter, in a cabinet or on a shelf we have been meaning to get working again," Rehard said. "This event is a fun way to figure out if it can be fixed and, if not, how it can be recycled or properly disposed."

Residents interested in volunteering as a repair expert can contact the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District at [email protected] or 573-817-6422. Rehard said they hope to build up a volunteer pool to host future Fix-it Fairs in Jefferson City on a regular basis.

The Home Show will run 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday throughout Capital Mall, 3600 Country Club Drive. More information on specific vendors and a vendor map can be found on the HBA's website, hbacentralmo.com/events/hba-home-show.
