A Maries County reserve deputy sheriff has tested positive for COVID-19.

Sheriff Chris Heitman said in a post on his department's Facebook page the deputy was volunteering this past Saturday.

"We believe we have contacted everyone who he had contact with and extra precautions are being taken at our office," Heitman said.

Heitman also said those who came to the Sheriff's Office this past Saturday should take the necessary steps to protect themselves and others.

"It is believed that my deputy contracted the virus by attending his church in Jefferson City the Wednesday prior to reporting for duty and did not show signs of symptoms until after his shift," Heitman said.

Heitman said the reserve deputy has had mild symptoms and seems to be recovering.
