State higher education department to release reopening guidance

The Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development plans to privately release a checklist to support colleges and universities in their planning for reopening for in-person classes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state's Coordinating Board for Higher Education briefly discussed the idea Tuesday, and Mara Woody, assistant commissioner of the Office of Postsecondary Policy, said the checklist is "really just to give institutions ideas of what they may consider when they write their fall-reopening plans."

Woody said the guidance was pulled from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other sources.

DHEWD spokeswoman Becky Dunn told the News Tribune: "The checklist has not been released, and there is no plan to release it to the public. It's a working document created to support colleges and universities as they develop plans to reopen this fall. It is not directive or exhaustive but designed to supplement conversations already underway on each campus."
