JC Parks plans fall walk-and-read event

A free family event will combine exercise and reading at Jefferson City parks this fall.

The partnership between the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department; Scholastic Inc.; and Luetkemeyer Signs brings these healthy habits together for Storybook Trails.

Beginning at noon Tuesday through Oct. 1, walkers can enjoy "Ribbit!" at Ellis-Porter Riverside Park. A second Storybook Trail - "Ready, Set, School!" - is planned Oct. 1-15 at the West Edgewood Drive Greenway.

The books are displayed in large printouts and spread along the trails, JC Parks Aquatics Program Manager Julie Haupt said. The books are geared toward youth reading at a 5- to 8-year-old level.

"The books are spaced out enough so that you can talk about the pages throughout the trail," Haupt said.

Each book will teach a positive lesson and aim to motivate youth.

Walking the trails can provide good one-on-one time with children, Haupt said.

"It gets kids and parents a good opportunity to get out and exercise and read a book at the same time."
