A State Technical College of Missouri faculty member is on leave pending a formal investigation into a complaint involving alleged discrimination.

State Tech Director of Marketing Brandon McElwain would not say what kind of alleged discrimination was involved, but the complaint "did involve the classroom."

McElwain added: "We have a process in place so that when students have concerns, we plan to investigate them quickly before they escalate. We heard of this complaint for the first time (Nov. 13), and the employee was placed on leave immediately."

He would not say if the employee's leave was paid.

Complaints are handled by the vice president of student affairs, who will interview students and any other people involved, McElwain said.

"We have a non-discrimination policy that we take very seriously here at State Tech, and we are committed to said policy," he said.

That non-discrimination policy, available at statetechmo.edu/non-discrimination-policy, states: "State Technical College of Missouri is committed to nondiscrimination and equal opportunities in its admissions, educational programs, activities and employment regardless of race, gender identity, gender expression, sex, sexual orientation, religion, color, national origin, age, disability, or status as a protected veteran to ensure nondiscrimination."

McElwain said the policy "is communicated on a regular basis," including at orientations for students and staff.
