South Brooks stormwater project enters final phase

The Cole County Commission has approved an agreement for engineering services for the third phase of stormwater improvements on South Brooks Drive.

“Like the other two, it really affects more than just South Brooks, but that is the main street involved,” Cole County Engineer Eric Landwehr said. “This new phase will be the last of the phases on South Brooks and also includes work on Bradley Drive and Jasper Lane/Bret Court.”

The commission awarded the engineering contract to Bartlett & West for $103,897.50.

Pre-design construction costs are estimated at $990,000, subject to change based on final design, Landwher said.

Construction is expected to start in spring 2021.

The second round of work on South Brooks Drive was targeted in three locations: South Brooks Drive, Starlite Drive and Collier Lane/Collier Court. The first round was targeted at South Brooks Drive and Shady Lane.

All these streets are in the Westview Heights area, which has experienced flooding problems over the past couple of years. Public works officials said many of the pipes in the area were installed in the 1970s and 1980s and need to be replaced with more modern piping that can last longer.
