Attempted traffic stop turns into chase, hostage situation

An attempted traffic stop Wednesday afternoon led to a brief hostage situation in Jefferson City.

According to Jefferson City Police Department spokesman Lt. Dave Williams, officers attempted to stop a Jefferson City man who reportedly had several warrants for his arrest around 3:40 p.m. in the area of Myrtle Avenue and Stadium Boulevard.

The man failed to yield and, at the intersection of Stadium and Southwest Boulevard, he attempted to drive through the area but crashed into another vehicle.

"This led to a hostage situation as he was not willing to exit the vehicle," Williams said. "The man did have a small child in the vehicle with him."

Police negotiators were brought in to talk to the man and shortly after 4 p.m., Williams said, the man allowed for the child to be taken out to safety. The man was taken into custody a short time later.

Williams added that it did not appear that the female child suffered any injuries from the crash or any activity after the crash, and she was turned over to her mother.
