Early morning fire destroys Jefferson City house

Fire gutted a single-story home in eastern Jefferson City early Wednesday morning.

The Jefferson City Fire Department reports responding around 2:13 a.m. to a house on fire in the 200 block of Benton Street. Firefighters discovered the structure was fully engulfed in flame upon their arrival.

The home was reported to be a vacant structure, authorities said.

For safety reasons, firefighters fought the blaze outside the structure. They made a defensive attack on the fire and brought it under control in approximately 45 minutes. The building is considered to be a total loss.

All units left the scene by around 5:45 a.m.

A total of 11 firefighters, one chief officer and two Cole County EMS personnel responded to the incident. The Jefferson City Police Department also assisted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
