New judge to hear 2017 Jefferson City murder case

A Jefferson City man charged in a May 2017 murder has had his request granted for a new judge to hear his case.

The request of Dana Day Jr., 29, was granted during a hearing Thursday before Cole County Presiding Judge Pat Joyce.

There was no word on how soon a new judge would be appointed.

Day is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, second-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

He is accused of killing Taveeon Fowler, 23.

Cole County Prosecutor Locke Thompson said this case was sent straight to the Cole County Grand Jury in July with a suppressed indictment. The grand jury found there was enough evidence to send the case to the circuit courts for possible trial. With a suppressed indictment, information such as a probable cause statement giving details about the crime is not made public.

At the time of the crime, officers said the shooting occurred late the night of May 8, 2017, in the vicinity of the 700 block of Monroe Street.

Witnesses reported eight to 12 gunshots being fired. Responding officers located a man, identified as Fowler, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Fowler was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead as a result of his wounds.
