Missouri Department of Corrections officials are investigating a stabbing at Jefferson City Correctional Center that left one inmate with reportedly serious injuries.

DOC Spokeswoman Karen Pojmann said the incident occurred just after 8 a.m. in the prison's gym.

She said the suspect offender used a homemade weapon to carry out the attack.

Pojmann said to her knowledge the facility was not put into a lockdown status at any time following this incident. She also said no one else was hurt in the incident, and she was unaware of what started the incident.

"The offender who was stabbed is doing well and was released from the hospital the same day," Pojmann said. "He's up and walking around."

Pojmann added the alleged attacker is now in administrative segregation at the prison and will be prosecuted for this new crime.

Although they were called to respond to the initial incident, Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler said as of Monday afternoon that his department was not working on the case and DOC was in charge.
