The Eldon Garden Club wants to get trees planted in areas where the May 22 tornado uprooted or damaged several.

At Tuesday's Eldon Board of Aldermen meeting, club President Dave Hemminger said they are working with the Missouri Department of Conservation and Forest ReLeaf of Missouri to secure free trees.

"We're providing the opportunity for residents and landowners in Eldon and the surrounding community that had a tree loss to be able to get replacement trees as a result of the tornado on the 22nd of May," Hemminger said.

Approximately 75 native trees - red oak, white oak, red bud, river birch and wahoo trees - have been reserved.

Club Treasurer Joan Eads said they will work with Miller County Emergency Management and Eldon officials to determine the need. Residents will be given more information about distribution.

More trees can be reserved, she added.

Once the trees are secured, the club expects delivery in early October. Those can be used at parks or personal property.

Garden clubs in Jefferson City are also working to get trees, according to MDC officials. Through a state garden program, clubs send funds to the Forest ReLeaf nonprofit for planting trees in areas impacted by natural disasters.

"Trees are important to our environment," Eads said. "We want to re-establish them. They produce shade, they produce shelter for our wildlife and add appeal to property."

MDC would help residents with planting instructions and caretaking of the trees planted, Hemminger said.
