Cole County and Jefferson City have agreed to split the cost of some remaining tornado recovery expenses.

The Cole County Commission agreed Monday to split the cost of paying Adventist Community Services for its help with a multi-agency resource center that served hundreds of families following the May 22 tornado.

The cost will be just more than $21,000, Cole County Emergency Management Director Bill Farr said.

The commission agreed to pay up to $11,000.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency could reimburse the county, Farr added.

After the tornado, Adventist Community Services worked with Capital West Christian Church on Fairgrounds Road to provide a distribution center/warehouse to house donations of clothing and household items for people affected by the disaster. More than $750,000 in items was donated, Farr said. The church allowed the distribution center to be positioned there for free.

The Fairgrounds Road distribution center closed in July. The operation has been housed at the former Sears store in Capital Mall since, Farr said.

Catholic Charities of Central and Northeast Missouri has taken over the responsibility for helping connect disaster victims with durable goods.

Catholic Charities will identify which durable goods - such as beds, furniture, small appliances, televisions and wall art - people lost during the tornado. The victims then will be able to arrange to pick up the items that can be replaced or have them shipped to their new or repaired homes.
