A Jefferson City man has been placed on five years of supervised probation in connection with leading police on a chase in December 2018.

Wayne Bush, 27, pleaded guilty during a hearing before Cole County Judge Jon Beetem to delivery of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. A charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed.

Another man charged in this case, Sevontez Harris, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of delivery of a controlled substance in May, and Beetem sentenced him to 120 days of shock detention in prison.

Officers were patrolling in the 200 block of West Atchison Street, which is an area authorities said has had a history of narcotics violations and weapons offenses, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Officers saw Bush and Harris in a vehicle on a parking lot of an apartment complex in the area. Bush was asleep and was awakened by one of the officers, who asked why the two were there. The officer said he saw two clear plastic bags in the center console area - one of which looked to have an unknown powdered substance and the other containing marijuana.

As officers were attempting to get the two to come out of the vehicle, Bush put the vehicle into drive and drove off.

Officers pursued the vehicle toward Broadway Street and onto the 400 block of West Miller Street, where Bush stopped. He and Harris were then taken into custody.

During a search of the vehicle, officers could not find the bags that had been seen earlier in the center console area, leading officers to believe they had been discarded as Bush and Harris fled from police. A small digital scale and a smoking pipe were found in the vehicle.

Later, officers found several clear plastic bags in the 700 block of Broadway Street, which was along the route Bush and Harris had taken. The bags contained various amounts of marijuana, powder cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin.

During an interview at the Cole County Jail, Bush said he fled from officers because he didn't have a valid driver's license.
