Man killed in Fulton shooting incident identified

The Fulton Police Department has released the name of the man who died in a shooting in Fulton on Saturday morning.

Thomas Payne, 23, of Fulton, was identified as the shooting victim, according to the FPD.

Preliminary findings from an autopsy performed Wednesday morning indicate Payne died from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso.

In the course of the investigation, officers learned Payne had entered a residence on the 600 block of Jefferson Street and was shot by the resident. The resident then called 911 to report the incident, according to the FPD news release.

Officers responded to the report of a gunshot at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday and discovered Payne with a gunshot wound.

Officers and paramedics performed immediate life-saving efforts on Payne, according to the news release. He was taken to an area hospital and later was pronounced dead.

The FPD said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation and, upon completion, will be sent to the Callaway County prosecuting attorney for review. Any further updates will be provided by the prosecuting attorney, Chris Wilson.

Payne graduated from South Callaway High School in 2015 and worked at Callaway Collision Center, according to an obituary. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton.
