Police took down a man using a non-lethal weapon Thursday morning in Jefferson City after he allegedly threatened to harm himself and officers.

Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of East Dunklin Street at approximately 10:31 a.m. for a man with a butcher knife standing in the middle of the road and yelling at bystanders, according to police reports.

When they arrived, officers reportedly found the man holding the knife against his abdomen and threatening to stab himself if officers came any closer.

Officers established a perimeter around the man and closed the 1100 block of East Dunklin Street to traffic.

Members of JCPD's Crisis Intervention Team arrived at approximately 10:40 a.m. and began talking with the man in an effort to get him to drop the knife.

After approximately 45 minutes, and with the man reportedly showing no indication that he was going to drop the knife, commanders decided approach the man and subdue him with a Taser. After the Taser was deployed, the man dropped the knife and was taken into custody with what were described as minor scrapes from falling to the pavement.

The man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Due to the medical nature of this call, the man's name was not released; and authorities said he is not facing any criminal charges.
