Groundbreaking set for Jefferson City's Community Park

After years of discussions, Jefferson City officials will break ground Tuesday at Community Park to kick off several improvements and upgrades.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Park entrance, 725 Marshall St.

Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin, Jefferson City Parks and Recreation commissioners Denise Chapel and Brad Bates, and Jefferson City Arts Foundation member Patsy Johnson will speak during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Children from the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City will perform and do the ceremonial breaking of the ground.

The improvements include a sprayground, playground equipment and structures, retaining walls, stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, installation of furnishings, paving, and surfacing.

"We are thrilled to see this area transform from an open field with antiquated playground equipment to a destination park that provides fun and unique recreation opportunities for residents and visitors," Parks Director Todd Spalding said.

The Parks Commission authorized a more than $1.46 million construction contract with Sircal Contracting earlier this month to make the improvements at Community Park.

In February, the Parks Commission and Jefferson City Council approved a $1.6 million supplemental appropriation within the Parks Department's fund balance. Those funds covered the cost of tables, benches, turf, sculptures, shelters, lighting, signage, landscaping, trees, playground and sprayground equipment, and a restroom, Spalding previously said.

Community Park is the Parks Commission's first priority from the parks master plan, which lists proposed improvements to the parks system over the next 20 years.
