Jefferson City police name weekend murder victim, 1 suspect arrested

The Jefferson City Police Department has arrested one person for possible involvement in the murder of a 20-year-old man over the weekend.

Marquis D. Avant, 22, was taken into custody after information was obtained that placed him at the location on Hickory Street where Robert Scott, of Jefferson City, was shot and killed, according to a JCPD news release Monday.

Police had not released Scott's name before Monday morning, pending notification of family, but had said the 911 communications center began receiving calls for shots fired in the 300 block of Hickory Street early Saturday morning when officers were involved in a separate vehicle pursuit in the area.

Officers who arrived on the scene at Hickory Street found Scott with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, but later died.

Detectives said there was a disturbance at a nearby residence that had spilled into the street, and witnesses confirmed that shots had been fired in the area at that time.

After being interviewed, Avant admitted to firing a weapon during the disturbance and concealing the weapon afterward to avoid being found in possession of the handgun, police said.

Charges of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence have been filed, and Avant is being held without bond, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Jefferson City Police Department at 573-634-6400 or CrimeStoppers at 659-TIPS (659-8477) or jeffcitycrimestoppers.com.
