Starting May 7, people traveling on eastbound and westbound U.S. 54 in Jefferson City will encounter a resurfacing and bridge improvement project stretching from the Missouri River Bridge to just south of the Stadium Boulevard interchange, according to a Missouri Department of Transportation news release.

The project includes resurfacing, pavement repair, shoulder repair and guardrail upgrades. Six bridges will be rehabilitated as part of the project: the eastbound and westbound U.S. 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard, the eastbound and westbound bridges over Broadway Street, the Madison Street U.S. 54 on-ramp bridge, and the ramp bridge that carries eastbound U.S. 50 to eastbound 54.

High-friction surface treatment will be reinstalled on the U.S. 54 curves at Madison Street.

Rehabilitation work on the eastbound U.S. 54 bridges over Stadium and Broadway will begin May 7. One lane of eastbound U.S. 54 will be closed 24 hours a day from south of Stadium to north of Broadway. The on-ramp from Christy Drive to eastbound U.S. 54 also will be closed. Both lanes of traffic will be open for the Memorial Day weekend. After Memorial Day, the lane and ramp closure will resume and will remain in place until work is completed on the eastbound bridges in mid-June.

Rehabilitation work on the ramp bridge that carries eastbound U.S. 50 to eastbound U.S. 54, located on the east loop leg of the tri-level, is tentatively scheduled to begin June 11. This work will result in the following around-the-clock ramp closures: westbound U.S. 54 to U.S. 50 and U.S. 63, eastbound U.S. 54 to U.S. 50 and southbound U.S. 63, and eastbound U.S. 50 to U.S. 54 and northbound U.S. 63. The detour route for all ramp closures is Missouri Boulevard. Work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by June 25.

Rehabilitation of the westbound U.S. 54 bridges over Stadium and Broadway and the U.S. 54 on-ramp from the Madison Street bridge is tentatively scheduled to begin July 9. U.S. 54 will be reduced to one lane 24 hours a day from north of Broadway to south of Stadium. The U.S. 54 on-ramp from Madison also will be closed. Work is tentatively scheduled to be completed on the westbound bridges and the on-ramp by Aug. 6.

After the bridge work is complete, there will be nightly lane closures on U.S. 54 and the adjacent ramps to perform pavement resurfacing work. Nightly work hours are from 7 p.m.-6 a.m.

All of the work is scheduled to be complete by Nov. 1.
