Kids Fishing Derby casts off Saturday

Families, grab your reels and rods Saturday and head to Binder Lake for the annual JC Parks' Kids Fishing Derby.

Check-in for the free event begins at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Binder Park Lake Deck (formerly the tackle shop), 1200 Binder Lake Road. The Capital Crappie Club fishing derby casts off at 8 a.m., and the award ceremony is slated for 9 a.m.

Prizes and trophies will be awarded for smallest, largest and most fish caught in the following age categories: 5 years old and younger, 6-9 years old, 10-12 years old and 13-16 years old.

The annual Jim Mertens Memorial Kids Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department along with the Elks Lodge, Capital City Fly Fishers, Capital Crappie Club, Mexico Bassmasters, and Merten's Bait and Tackle.
