The Missouri State Fair opens today, returning to its core mission and roots of celebrating youth agriculture.

Organizers announced last month that many fair events, including the opening day ceremony, Governor's Ham Breakfast, carnival midway and concerts, were canceled due to public health concerns.

Kari Mergen, marketing director for the Missouri State Fair, said they heard from 4-H and FFA members across the state, asking to simply let them show what they've been working on all year.

"A lot of these kids didn't even have a county fair," Mergen said, noting the importance of such events to those who are serious about both 4-H and FFA.

And that's been emphasized even further by the response. Mergen said entries are up 112 percent.

"I think we made the right decision," she said. "We're back to promoting agriculture."

The pared down event may also offer the opportunity for visitors to see parts of the fair that they haven't before, like the 4-H exhibits that will be displayed or any of the many judged shows on tap through Aug. 23. Mergen noted FFA has opted not to display the exhibits, though they will be judged.

Mergen encouraged people to check out the latest information on mostatefair.com, as well as fair social media accounts for any changes. The full judging schedule also can be found online. She said no changes were made to the youth livestock schedule as many parents take time off work and plan for those dates in advance.

Mergen said another staple will be available - fair food. From corn dogs to funnel cakes, fair favorites will be easy to find. Mergen said they are encouraging businesses in the Sedalia area to bring out the staff for lunch.

"Come on out," she said.

There is no admission charge to enter the Missouri State Fair this year.
