Artist Linda Hoover showcases a Biblical themed mural she did utilizing real people at her church as models, a “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” mural at the Northwest (Pettis County R-5) School District gymnasium where she used to teach at Hugesville, and aother mural featuring a mustang.

Artist and educator Linda Hoover, president of Sedalia Visual Arts Association, is back to discuss and share more of her murals.

Hoover's goal in painting a Biblical scene was to emphasize the people involved were real people. They are people, just like you and me. She did not hire professional models who would look like Hollywood actors. She asked people she knew to pose for the painting.

She told the congregation at her church about the plan she had for the painting. The members brought children, grandchildren and other relatives for Hoover to photograph. They set the date, posed the characters and began with a group photo. She had some children sit for quick sketches and additional photographs to provide details.

During a Sunday morning service, she saw a lady holding a little boy. Hoover loved the lady's expression. She snapped a photo of the boy's cute, thick hair sticking up. It was serendipitous, Hoover said. She had planned to have an older boy carry the little guy on his back for this pose. Her plan didn't work out because the older boy proved to be embarrassed. Then Hoover saw a friend with the same little boy and that proved to be perfect for their group. She explained the Apostles of Christ were trying to keep children from bothering Jesus, who said, "let them come to me." Hoover did not hinder the children. She said people are drawn to Christ. He said unless you enter as one of this children, you will not see the kingdom of God. "Whoever will not receive the kingdom as a child shall not enter."

Hoover wants people to think about what it means to be "like a child." Not childish, but childlike. To be more humble, trusting, obedient and loving, like a foreshadowing of heavenly things to come.

Hoover painted the giant mustang crashing through the gymnasium wall at Northwest School District, where Hoover had taught, at Houstonis/Hugesville in 2009. The mascot at this school was the mustang, and "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" was commissioned for an inside door. Hoover said the owner had given permission to show it this summer. If they decide how it will be displayed, Hoover will be showing it at the Goddard Gallery at State Fair Community College.

Hoover is available to draw caricatures at parties, graduations, anniversaries, picnics or events. For more information, call Hoover at 660-238-6242 or [email protected].
