Liv Paggiarino/News Tribune After 61 years, House of Bargains is dramatically reducing the size of its business. The only department that will remain open is the House of Bargains Rent-It Center.

After 61 years of business, House of Bargains will close the majority of its operations by this summer.

HOB, at 5505 Business 50 West, will significantly reduce its inventory and close all departments except for its hardware department and Rent-It Center, owner Jean Bogg said.

It will also continue to sell fireworks for the Fourth of July, she added.

HOB sells a wide range of items, including housewares, sporting goods, furniture, office supplies, electronics, giftware and more.

Bogg said she isn't sure when the departments will officially close but anticipates it will be before June.

"It's kind of a 'guesstimate' to how long because there's a lot of merchandise out here that needs to find a new home, and it's only a guess as to how long it will take for me to do something with that merchandise," she said.

To reduce its inventory, the store is offering 10-50 percent off the majority of its products.

Online shopping is growing and customers are turning to big box stores more for merchandise, Bogg said. She added the current U.S. 50, which bypasses Business 50 West, also means customers often don't see HOB.

"A lot of factors have been involved, and it's just time," she said. "It's been an interesting ride."
