What started as do-it-yourself bow-making for Brittny Gibson's daughter has flourished into a full-blown business.

Gibson opened Brittny's Bowtique in mid-November at 275 Karen Drive in Holts Summit. The store sells various children's clothes, primarily for girls 2-9 years old, but there are clothes for both boys and girls from birth to about 12 years old. The store also has accessories like children's hats and Gibson's bows.

The mother of two started making bows about seven months ago because her 1-year-old daughter, Riley, was "pretty bald," Gibson said with a chuckle. When Gibson saw the opportunity to grow her hobby into a business, she jumped at it.

"I wanted to start it in Holts Summit because I've been in Holts Summit my whole life, and there was nothing like this that has ever been done here, so I figured I would just give it a try and see how it goes," she said.

Now, Riley and Gibson's son, Tucker, 3, enjoy modeling the clothes and accessories at Brittny's Bowtique. They also spend most days at the store so they get to see their mom doing something she enjoys.

"I'm just glad I get to spend this time with them and hopefully turn this into something where they can grow into it - maybe my daughter will be running the register and my son will be shipping stuff out," Gibson said as the sound of her children's cheers floated from the playroom.

Being a young entrepreneur can be terrifying, though, Gibson said. When the 26-year-old started renting the Karen Drive space, there was about a month of renovations, including knocking down walls, building a changing room and adding faux shiplap to the walls.

"It's very exciting to start a new journey, but it's also really scary because you don't know how it's going to go," Gibson said. "I've lived in Holts Summit my whole life, and I've seen stores come and go, and sometimes it can be hard to make it in Holts Summit. I just I'm going to try it out and see how it goes."
