Prep Track and Field: Capital City boys win title at Holt Invitational

WENTZVILLE -- The Capital City Cavaliers finished first out of 16 teams Saturday at the Holt Invitational, while the Lady Cavaliers tied for third out of 20 teams.

The Cavaliers finished with 102 points to claim team honors, Cahokia was second 88 and Troy-Buchanan was third with 80 points.

Levi Casey was the lone event winner for Capital City, taking individual honors in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet, 11¾ inches.

Isaiah Franklin and Keion Grieve grabbed two top-three finishes each.

Franklin finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.04 seconds and took third in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.32 seconds. Grieve took second in the 1,600-meter run in 4:27.77 and third in the 800-meter run with time of 1:57.64.

The Cavaliers had three other individuals and a relay team post top-five finishes.

Elijah Jahr placed third in the shot put with a throw of 41-5, Brooks Horton had a third-place throw of 138-0 in the discus and Rocky Nelson ran a fourth-place time of 10:47.23 in the 3,200-meter run.

Nelson also teamed with Harlan Thomas, Tyler Johnson and Gauge Walker to take fourth in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:01.09.

The Lady Cavaliers won four events on their way to tie for third place with 71 points.

Troy-Buchanan won team honors with 81 points, Liberty: Wentzville was second with 76 and Capital City finished in a tie with Hazlewood Central.

Rebecca Porting led the way as a double winner in field events, taking first in the shot put with a throw of 35-6 and winning the discus throw with a heave of 121-4.

Tyrica Sterrett and Madilyn Shewmaker each won one event and finished second once as individuals.

Sterrett won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.16 seconds and ran a second-place time of 26.28 seconds in the 200-meter dash, while Shewmaker finished first in the 300 hurdles in 50.63 seconds and took second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.82 seconds.

Shewmaker and Sterrett each were a leg on two Lady Cavalier top-three finishing relay teams. The pair teamed with Alaya Bryant-Hughes and Layla Hess to take second in the 4x100-meter relay in 51.77 seconds, then ran alongside Braynt-Hughes and Malaika Kamara in the 4x200-meter relay, taking third with a time of 1:49.13.

Rounding out Capital City’s top-five finishers were Miriam Abott taking third in the pole vault (8-0), Kylie Baker finishing third in the javelin (87-6), Kari Kemna taking third in the 800 (2:40.42), Michele Narug with a fourth-place finish in the discus (105-11) and Jayla Grinston finishing fifth in the shot put (30-10½).

The Cavaliers will compete Thursday at Glendale, while the Lady Cavaliers will return to action Friday in the Girls Night Out at Parkview.
