Track and field head coach Thomas placed on leave at Lincoln

Longtime Lincoln track and field coach Victor Thomas was put on administrative leave Thursday, the school’s athletic department announced in a press release.

The leave, which took effect immediately, was the result of an alleged violation of the university’s code of conduct. Assistant coach Ailene Smith will take over the program while Lincoln completes its investigation.

Thomas has been in charge of the Lincoln track and field program for 21 seasons and has been inducted into three halls of fame -- the Drake Relays Hall of Fame (2012), the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2021) and the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Hall of Fame last December.

Between the men’s and women’s programs, Thomas has coached 95 individual champions, 41 relay national champions and 671 USTFCCCA all-region honorees. Thomas has also guided Lincoln to 14 NCAA Division II track and field national championships during his tenure.

Smith will oversee the program as the Blue Tigers prepare to compete in the NCAA Division II indoor track and field national championships, which will be held March 8-9 at Pittsburg State.
