Lincoln women win, men fall in MIAA twinbill vs. Northeastern State

The Lincoln women’s basketball team had its 11-game losing streak come to an end Thursday at Jason Gym, as the Blue Tigers ran away with a 70-58 victory against the Northeastern State RiverHawks in MIAA play.

It was a back-and-forth first quarter with two ties and six lead changes, the last coming on a Kiara Cabrera driving layup as time wound down in the quarter to send Lincoln to the second up 17-16.

The Blue Tigers led the rest of the way.

Lincoln’s lead was 22-20 about three minutes into the second, but the Blue Tigers followed with a 7-0 run ending with two Saniya Simmons free throws to move ahead by nine with just less than four minutes left in the half.

Emily Weathers connected on a turnaround jumper with about :25 left in the half for Northeastern State to cut its deficit to 31-24 headed into the locker room.

Ashlyn Alloway scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the first half for Lincoln.

Following a Weathers jumper to start the second half, the Blue Tigers went on a 10-1 run to extend their lead out to 14 points at 41-27 with about six minutes remaining in the third.

Lincoln led by as many as 15 points, coming at 51-36 with about two minutes left, in the quarter and took a 55-43 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

The Blue Tigers put the game away with an 11-2 run in the fourth, making all five shot attempts during the span, to increase their lead to a game-high 20 points at 70-50 with about four minutes left.

The RiverHawks scored the final eight points of the game to create the final margin.

Miriam Bazylewicz joined Alloway in double figures with 14 points for Lincoln.

Halie Jones paced Northeastern State (14-13, 10-11 MIAA) with 13 points and Grace Abercrombie added 11.

The Blue Tigers (7-20, 3-18 MIAA) will close out their season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jason Gym when they host Rogers State (10-17, 5-16 MIAA), which dropped an 83-71 decision Thursday at Central Missouri.


For the third consecutive game, the Lincoln men’s basketball team let a double-digit lead in the second half slip away in a defeat, as the Blue Tigers dropped an 82-74 decision against the Northeastern State RiverHawks in MIAA play at Jason Gym.

Lincoln led 64-54 with about nine minutes left, but the RiverHawks responded with a 13-2 run to take the lead for good on a Trey Quartlebaum 3-pointer with just less than five minutes to play.

Northeastern State was not done, either, as it stretched the run all the way out to 21-4 to build the advantage to 75-68 with about 2:10 remaining.

DJ Richardson responded with a pull-up jumper to cut it to a five-point game, but that was the closest the Blue Tigers got in the final two minutes.

The RiverHawks started the contest fast and jumped out to a 12-3 just more than five minutes in following an Ethan Blackmon hook shot.

Northeastern State continued the fast start and stretched its lead to 19-8 about seven minutes into the game.

Lincoln found its footing offensively to follow, making four of its next five shot attempts to cut its deficit to 24-18 about halfway through the half.

The Blue Tigers took their first lead of the game on the final possession of the half, as Sam Rautins knocked down a 3 with about four seconds left to send Lincoln to the locker room up 38-37.

There were six ties and four lead changes in the opening six minutes of the second half before Lincoln went on a 12-2 run to take the 10-point lead.

Richardson and Rautins each scored 16 points to lead the way for the Blue Tigers, Franck Yetna added 12 and Peyton Williams — playing in his first game action since Dec. 18 against William Woods — chipped in 10.

Anthony Allen finished with a game-high 25 points for Northeastern State (11-16, 6-15 MIAA) and Blackmon added 22 of his own.

Lincoln (14-13, 9-12 MIAA) will wrap up the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday against Rogers State (16-11, 13-8 MIAA), which dropped a 75-57 decision Thursday at Central Missouri, at Jason Gym.
