Lincoln basketball falls to Washburn in MIAA doubleheader

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Lincoln men’s basketball team let a double-digit lead slip away for the second time this season against the Washburn Ichabods in a 66-64 loss Thursday in MIAA play.

Lincoln jumped in front 8-1 in the first four-plus minutes of the game and led by as many as 11 in the first half before taking a 31-22 advantage to the locker room.

The Blue Tigers took their biggest lead of the night at 42-30 just more than five minutes into the second half.

But the Ichabods used a 12-0 run to tie the game at 42. Lincoln moved back in front on the next possession and led for the next six-plus minutes until Washburn tied the score again at 56.

The Blue Tigers took their final lead with about 20 seconds left with two DJ Richardson free throws, but Brady Christiansen knocked down a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left to give the Ichabods the victory.

Richardson led Lincoln with 20 points, Sam Rautins added 14 and Elijah Farr finished with 10.

Freshman Brayden Shorter paced Washburn (16-9, 12-7 MIAA), which is receiving votes in the latest NABC rankings, with 25 points and Jack Bachelor added 13.

The Blue Tigers (14-11, 9-10) will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Emporia State (17-10, 10-9).


The Lincoln women dropped their 10th straight game Thursday after a 71-62 loss to the Washburn Ichabods.

The two sides played to a tie at 18 after the first quarter, but the second quarter was too much for the Blue Tigers to overcome the rest of the way.

Washburn outscored Lincoln 18-4 in the second to take a 36-22 lead into the locker room.

Alloway led four Blue Tigers in double figures with 16 points, Steph Torres was next with 14 and Hanne Nybo and AJ Bradley each added 10.

Aubrey Dewey led Washburn (12-13, 7-12) with 19 points and Yiibari Nwidadah added 15.

Lincoln (6-19, 2-17) will be back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Emporia State.
